A Legacy of Theater at Griswold High School
The Griswold High School Drama program has been part of school life since Griswold High School was incorporated in 1936. Early yearbooks document theatrical traditions such as senior plays as far back as the 1940s, and over the decades, Griswold Drama has grown into a program known for both its longevity and its heart.
Today, the program proudly continues that legacy with an annual fall play and spring musical—traditions that have been in place for more than 26 years and continue to evolve with each new generation of students.
Our Productions
The origins of Griswold Drama date back to the very beginning of Griswold High School itself. In the 1936 Griswold High School yearbook, The Green Sentinel, the school documented its first dramatics club production, along with a “senior play” presented in June of that same year. Both productions were directed by Mr. Gerald Cushing.
According to the yearbook, the dramatics club had a large and enthusiastic membership, and the productions were considered very successful. Students and staff served as cast members, stage managers, and ticket managers, while music was "furnished" by the high school orchestra, kickstarting the community spirit that has long defined the program.
The completion of the original high school building at 211 Slater Avenue (now Griswold Middle School) gave the drama program a permanent home in a new auditorium. Plays and musicals continued to take shape on that stage for decades, until the current Griswold High School was constructed in 1992.
